A 35 yr old resident of Atlanta. Born in Cleveland, Ohio. While attending Morehouse College he co-founded America's first African Fraternity; KMT Asen in 1987. He served as Chairman of Metro Atlanta Kwanzaa Assn (M.A.K.A.) and membership.from 1988-2000. He co-founded Klub Kuumba; an open mic poetry gathering (1993-2000) Zakee also worked with the Atlanta homeless population and served as program director for Trinity House-Big Bethel program for homeless men with drug problems. During his tenure there; Zakee established the Kalonji Brotherhood: a rite of passage support group for men in recovery. Zakee has received numerous awards for social and artistic endeavors and appeared on several media outlets for his work. Zakee is committed to serving our youth and inspiring a new generation of artists and leaders. "The inspiration for my work comes from African/African American culture.     The Art of Literacy & Storytelling: Combining Language Skills and Visual Arts Call for Visual Art Classes The Art of Literacy & Storytelling: Combining Language Skills and Visual Arts Call for Visual Art Classes: Visual Literacy Workshops – How can one read a painting or a piece of art? What is the connection between creating a work of art and telling a story? We are seeking classes and instructors who can explore these connections between literacy, story telling, and visual arts. We are particularly looking for classes in the following areas: Mixed Media Painting Drawing Collage Multiple submissions permitted . One application per class series. Eligibility: Applicants must live in METRO Atlanta, GA Applicants must be able to teach classes in person at the ArtsXchange. Applicants must be experienced teaching artists with minimum of 5 years teaching experience. Application/Entry Fee: No application/ Entry fee ROUND ONE Deadline for Submissions: Sunday, April 6, 2025 Selection Notification: Tuesday, April 15, 2025 CLASS DATES must take place between: Thursday, May 1, 2025 - Monday, June 30, 2025 CLASS TIMES must be between: Tuesday - Fridays ( No classes on Mondays, Sundays or Saturdays ) 11AM - 5PM ROUND TWO Deadline for Submissions: Monday, June 30, 2025 Selection Notification: Tuesday, July 10, 2025 CLASS DATES must take place between: Tuesday, July 1, 2025 - Monday, November 30, 2026 CLASS TIMES must be between: Tuesday - Saturday ( No classes on Mondays or Sundays) 11AM - 5PM Class Series Requirements: Classes Series must be taught in person at the ArtsXchange. Classes can be for youth only, seniors only or intergenerational. Classes must be able to accommodate a minimum class size ten (10) students. Instructor can set the maximum class size. Class description and syllabus must demonstrate connections between visual art, storytelling and language literacy. Class participants will be required / strongly encouraged to participate in the entire class series. Teaching Artist Compensation $250 per class - Experienced teaching artists rate 25% to be paid at the completion of the first class. Remaining 75% to be paid at the completion of the series with accompanying final report. Final report template will be provided.     Moving in the Spirit 2024 Ebon Dooley Honoree Change Maker Contact https://movinginthespirit.org Moving in the Spirit began in 1986 as the hopeful vision of Leah Mann, Genene Stewart and Dana Marie Lupton who believed they could unite their love for dance with their commitment to social justice and serving youth. What began as a dance class for a small group of girls at Stewart Avenue Women and Children’s Shelter has blossomed into a large and diverse organization with dedicated alumni, a world class theater, the Beam, and is a beacon of hope, a destination for dance, and a portal for change that reaches over 350 children every week across Atlanta.     Judy Conder 2020 Ebon Dooley Honoree Bridge Builder http://www.youtube.com/artemisthedrummer In 2006 when Judy Conder learned that the so-called “weapons of mass destruction” would likely lead to war, she bought a video camera, joined the anti-war movement, and began following the Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition around, documenting their protests and activities. Soon she met Atlanta WAND, Veterans for Peace, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, School of the Americas Watch, the International Action Center and though the years Georgia Detention Watch, Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights (GLAHR), Occupy Atlanta, Food Not Bombs, ATL Grandmothers for Peace, the Moral Monday Movement, Georgia Alliance for Social Justice, the Metro ATL Democratic Socialists of America, the Great Speckled Bird staff, Black Lives Matter, Extinction Rebellion, and many more. Through her fourteen years as an Atlanta videographer, Judy has documented protests, die-in’s, sit-in’s, rallies, marches, press conferences, re-enactments, and acts of civil disobedience in the areas of social justice, racial equality, environment, healthcare, immigration, women’s rights, and gun control, etc. as well as having filmed local creative arts performances including dance, music, and poetry. Her fourteen-year body of work can be found on her Georgia Grassroots Video Youtube channel. Currently, during the time of covid, Judy works from home publishing a daily bulletin of local events, both political and cultural, which features videos and artistic works from younger videographers and creative artists. Her new objective is to form a local community media collective in which members can contribute political and artistic content.     Meadowlark Pictures 2022 Ebon Dooley Honoree Emerging Leader Meadowlark Pictures comprises an ambitious trio of writers/producers/directors who aim to create bold stories and ensure that history is correctly passed down for generations. The group includes Noah Washington , a Georgia State University senior, FanBase app marketing copywriter, former BronzeLens Film Festival intern and great-grandson of Booker T. Washington; Solomon Simmon , a SCAD alum and aspiring filmmaker who has appeared onscreen in the TV dramedy “Atlanta;” and Zipporah Dorsey , also a SCAD alum, blogger, and writer whose directorial debut came in the Meadowlark Pictures play, “1906.” The play, a retelling of the Atlanta Race Massacre of 1906 through the eyes of Black men who defended themselves, premiered at the AXC and has been part of many city- and county-wide commemorations of the lives lost.     Omelika Kuumba 2023 Ebon Dooley Honoree Change Maker Omelika Kuumba has taught African dance for the past 25 years at Spelman College. She specializes in African Dance Forms, a cornerstone for dance majors, and introduced a new course, West African Rhythms. Kuumba, or Sister Omelika as she is affectionately called is a drummer, dancer, choreographer, musical arranger, and cultural arts educator. She is a Spelman alum and studied under the direction of master dancers and percussionists in the U.S. and in Senegal, West Africa. Her career accomplishments include: performing during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games; teaching and choreographing at Trollwood Performing Arts School in North Dakota, and teaching percussion and choreographing in Stuttgart, Germany, Hastings, England and Bermuda. Sister Omeika co-founded GIWAYEN MATA, an award-winning dance, percussion and vocal ensemble. She is a former Student Government Association member, Miss Maroon and White at Morehouse, and member of the Eta Kappa Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.     Elizabeth Omilami 2020 Ebon Dooley Honoree Economic Justice Champion https://www.facebook.com/eomilami Elisabeth Williams-Omilami has been "on the battlefield for her Lord", for over 30 years. Beginning as a very young girl, she accompanied her father, noted civil rights leader, Dr. Hosea Williams on marches and in movements across the south. Her "jailed for Freedom" record includes being the first Black woman in 75 years to spend the night in the Forsyth County jail during that infamous march in January of 1981. As an actress, she was able to combine her art with life as she toured in the play that her mother, State Representative Juanita T. Williams, co-wrote titled "The Life Of A King". Her parents, both gone home to be with the Lord in 2000, formed in her from a very early age that we all are accountable for each other and for the environment that exists on the planet and responsible to do all that we can to fight for justice for everyone. While working as an actress and playwright, Omilami had also worked for over 15 years in the background of her father's "Hosea Feed The Hungry and Homeless" efforts and, upon his passing in November of 2000, became the organization's CEO, expanding the organization to provide an additional 40,000 dinners yearly with the addition of events on M.L.K. Jr.'s Birthday and Easter Sunday. She is now planning for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners while adding to her busy speaking and touring schedule several international relief efforts in the Philippines and Uganda. She is a graduate of Hampton University in Theatre and founder of one of Atlanta's earliest theatre companies, People's Survival Theater, as well as the "Summer Artscamp", providing arts programming for economically challenged youth for over 7 years. She has written several plays, one of which "There Is A River In My Soul" will be touring in February 2002. She is a past member of both the Georgia Council For The Arts and the Fulton County Arts Council and is a passionate advocate for the arts to be instituted as a permanent part of our society. She is an accomplished actress and can be seen this Christmas at the Alliance Theatre in "A Christmas Carol" and in early 2002 in "Left Hand Singing" at the Jewish Theatre of The South. She can also be seen in the HBO made for television movie, Boycott (2001), and will be well remembered by fans of both In the Heat of the Night (1988) and the award-winning I'll Fly Away (1991). She is the wife of actor Afemo Omilami , co-director of "Hosea's Feed The Hungry and Homeless" and has two wonderful children - Awodele, 21, and Juanita, 16. She is a member of Abundant Life Church in Lithonia, Ga., where her Pastor is Rev. Woodrow Walker, II. She is an active member of the Prison, Missions, and Drama Ministries there.     Tasnim Mosabber 2018 Ebon Dooley Honoree Emerging Leader https://www.facebook.com/aitazzy Tasnim Mosabber is a visual artist who has demonstrated a history of using her platform to amplify issues and bring visibility to communities striving for justice. She began her journey in activism as president of her high school chapter of Amnesty International, for which she organized a fundraiser to help people impacted by the 2008 earthquake in Haiti. In college she worked with Planned Parenthood Federation and Get Covered America in their joint campaign to ensure that immigrants and low income people of color have access to affordable health insurance. Tasnim is currently the outreach coordinator for Raksha, Inc., an organization that works with South Asian survivors of domestic, sexual, and other violent crimes.     Courtney Brooks 2023 Ebon Dooley Honoree Jack Sinclair Visual Artist Alumni - Jack Sinclair Gallery Curator https://www.facebook.com/cbrooksart Courtney Brooks is an Atlanta based visual artist, art instructor and independent curator. Originally from Denver, Colorado, she rekindled her passion for painting by encouraging creativity and connecting communities through the arts. An avid supporter for all creatives, Courtney is proud to be a visual artist first and is not afraid to experiment with various mediums like, watercolor, acrylic, oils and photography. Through personal experiences, traveling aboard, whether teaching art classes, painting on canvas or walls, her love for art and building relationships have led to a journey of curating. Since 2014, she developed professional skills that have provided a platform for her peers through creative direction,team building, private and community fundraising events, solo shows and group exhibitions. The significance of the work Courtney has contributed thus far has opened many opportunities. She is the former a Gallery Director and curator of the Southeast Community Cultural Center, known as the ArtsXchange’s Jack Sinclair Gallery. In addition, the first woman of color Curator- in- Residence for Art the Atlanta BeltLine, where she will have the freedom to transform a public art space. Brooks has a gift to work with a wide range of entrepreneurs, small businesses, grass root based organizations and collaborates with emerging to established visual artists of multiple disciplines, cultures and backgrounds. Along with assisting artists/ muralist as a curator, she focuses on understanding the creative process and undiscovered narratives that provides a sense of urgency. Her goal is to help maximize artists’ potential and expand the visibility in their careers. She understands that being curator carries a role with great expectations and It is a privilege to share work from private collections, establish studio visits and handle concepts with care.
