Toxic Beauty invites artists 18+ to expose the tension between attraction and harm—including environmental damage, cultural pressure, and unseen consequences. All mediums welcome, with work encouraged from and about East Point and surrounding communities. Here, beauty is not innocent—it is a mirror, a warning, and a call to look deeper. At first glance, everything is dazzling, lush color, seductive surfaces, polished perfection. But look again. Toxic Beauty explores the darker side of allure, examining the hidden costs behind our ideas of beauty, success, and desire. This exhibition brings together works that blend captivating visuals with difficult truths, creating a space where attraction and harm coexist in uneasy balance. The artworks confront themes ranging from beauty standards and social media pressure to environmental injustice, public health concerns, and cultural toxicity. Some artists employ literal “toxic” materials or imagery, while others work metaphorically, revealing how harmful ideals seep quietly into daily life. Artists are especially encouraged to engage with issues and stories rooted in East Point, GA, and surrounding communities—local experiences, shared challenges, environmental concerns, and cultural impact—grounding the exhibition’s themes in lived reality and shared place. The exhibition is built on contrast: art that appears visually appealing at first, only to reveal a deeper, more unsettling reality. In this space, beauty is no longer innocent— it becomes a mirror, a warning, and an invitation to look deeper, encouraging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about themselves, their communities, and the planet. A 35 yr old resident of Atlanta. Born in Cleveland, Ohio. While attending Morehouse College he co-founded America's first African Fraternity; KMT Asen in 1987. He served as Chairman of Metro Atlanta Kwanzaa Assn (M.A.K.A.) and membership.from 1988-2000. He co-founded Klub Kuumba; an open mic poetry gathering (1993-2000) Zakee also worked with the Atlanta homeless population and served as program director for Trinity House-Big Bethel program for homeless men with drug problems. During his tenure there; Zakee established the Kalonji Brotherhood: a rite of passage support group for men in recovery. Zakee has received numerous awards for social and artistic endeavors and appeared on several media outlets for his work. This powerful new exhibition enjoins the masterful paintings of Darnelle Louis-Jacques of Haiti (Ayiti) and Reinilda Blair of the Dominican Republic (Quisqueya) for a rare, intimate dialogue of heritage and healing. “We’re telling the story of our ancestors — the Taínos — and the deep cultural and spiritual threads that connect Ayiti and Quisqueya across a fractured past,” said Blair. “We’re bringing our visions together as one voice, one island, one legacy.” Through paintings and personal narrative, the artists excavate their Taíno roots and confront the layered histories of the shared island and the current challenges between their countries. Nexus of the Taíno is both a tribute to ancestral strength and a call for unity and empathy amid ongoing social and political tensions. More than an exhibit, it is a reclamation, the artists said. “We are bridging the unnecessary gap between Haiti and DR through our creativity,” Louis-Jacques added. “We want everyone to get a sense of the island through our art, through our food, through our music.” Bold, necessary, and deeply moving, the exhibit transcends geographic and cultural borders, offering a vision for a more just and interconnected future for Ayiti and Quisqueya. Blair’s paintings are noted for their bright, rich hues and detailed representation, creating a dynamic interplay between form and color that adds depth and vitality to her subjects. Blair’s work has been exhibited at notable venues such as Mason Fine Art, Alpharetta Arts Center, Fulton Government Center, and Emma Darnell Aviation Center. Her recent solo show at Arts Clayton Gallery received acclaim for its evocative visual impact and emotional resonance. Darnelle Louis-Jacques is a Haitian-American self-taught artist based in Atlanta and originally from the vibrant streets of Brooklyn. After high school she wanted to study architecture in college but that career choice wasn’t supported by her family. This led Louis-Jacques to pick a field that would please herself and family. After earning degrees in dental lab technology and applied science in baking and patisserie, Darnelle still felt unfulfilled. In May of 2019, Darnelle was involved in a near-death car wreck which left her immobilized for a few months. That experience reunited with her first love: Art. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground.” — Frederick Douglass From the Stono Rebellion of 1739 to the murals of Atlanta and the marches in Ferguson, the language of resistance has always been spoken — in movement, in memory, and in the marks we make upon the world. From Stono to Now: The Fire This Time charts a powerful lineage of Black rebellion and creative defiance, presenting a curatorial arc that spans uprisings, visionaries, and visual declarations of freedom. This exhibition brings together works from multiple exhibited collections that speak to our shared legacy of protest, self-determination, and survival. Featured works include: Traci Mims’ searing depictions of Sojourner Truth, Fred Hampton, and Huey P. Newton, which honor the lineage of Black radical thought and leadership. Jamaal Barber’s To Be Free and Underground Railroad, which visualize both the physical and spiritual journey toward liberation. Najee Dorsey’s Gullah Jack and Google Robert Charles, brought to life through evocative photomontage and mixed media, reminding us that rebellion is rooted in American soil. Kevin Williams and other contemporary voices challenge and expand the narrative, anchoring today’s resistance in the textures of daily Black life, love, and refusal. “This is not nostalgia — it is testimony. A living archive.” From sugarcane fields to city blocks, from coded quilts to bullhorn chants, From Stono to Now frames the art of resistance not as relic, but as a roadmap. The Haunts of Black Kirby The Haunts of Black Kirby An exhibition of works from the dawn of Afrofuturism Sept 2, 2023 - Oct 28, 2023 CURATORS Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library ARTIST Black Kirby The Haunts of Black Kirby Presented in partnership with the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library Black Kirby—the pseudonym assumed by the acclaimed visual artists and professors, John Jennings and Stacey Robinson—are Alchemists. They take raw materials from black history, hip hop, and comic book mythology and remix them to create new universes, never-before seen technologies, and biting satires about the world we live in today. Each of the Black Kirby images serves as a funky, rare artifact from an alternate universe, fully formed, and autonomous from its earthly origins. The works in this exhibition are on loan from the Atlanta University Center (AUC) Robert W. Woodruff Library. The Haunts of Black Kirby is derived from “The Alchemist’s Notebook: The Satire, Remixes, and Haunts of Black Kirby”, an exhibition organized by the AUC Woodruff Library in 2019. As it twists and turns in the immense heat, you smell the stench of a hot fusion that breathes life into a new creation, indeed a new element, that has never existed before.
