  • Oronike Odeleye

Oronike Odeleye 2020 Ebon Dooley Honoree Change Maker Oronike Odeleye is a freelance Arts & Entertainment consultant who has worked with a range of clients including ONE Musicfest, The National Black Arts Festival, The Annie B Casey Foundation, American Express, The Atlanta Hawks, and The City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office. In 2017 she co-founded the #MuteRKelly campaign to advocate for the black community's divestment from accused serial sexual abuser, R. Kelly. Through her work over the past 2 years, the #MuteRKelly campaign has gotten 16 concerts canceled in the US and abroad, held protest rallies in 8 cities, had his music downgraded from streaming platforms and banned from radio stations across the nation, gotten RCA to end his recording contract, and has seen charges brought against him by the FBI and Chicago PD, and investigations launched in Atlanta, GA and Detroit, Michigan. Most importantly, her work has sparked conversations around the nation about sexual abuse in the #MeToo era, childhood sexual abuse in the Black community, and the politics of race, wealth and fame in bringing abusers to justice. Oronike was featured in the explosive Lifetime docu-series, Surviving R Kelly, and has been interviewed on-air and in print by publications worldwide including The New York Times, The Roland Martin Show, NPR, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Rolling Stone, BBC, and The Root, as well as on countless radio stations and podcasts. She has lectured nationwide about the #MuteRKelly campaign, social media activism, rape culture, race and gender politics in intersectional feminisim, childhood sexual abuse in the Black Community, and modern ideas around female sexuality at Morehouse College, Norfolk State University, Princeton University, and Syracuse University. In 2019, Oronike was honored as one of OkayAfrica's 100 Women, celebrating women from Africa and the Diaspora disrupting the status quo. In April 2019 she was honored with the Activist Impact Award at the Breakthrough Inspiration Awards in NYC. Toxic Beauty invites artists 18+ to expose the tension between attraction and harm—including environmental damage, cultural pressure, and unseen consequences. All mediums welcome, with work encouraged from and about East Point and surrounding communities. Here, beauty is not innocent—it is a mirror, a warning, and a call to look deeper. At first glance, everything is dazzling, lush color, seductive surfaces, polished perfection. But look again. Toxic Beauty explores the darker side of allure, examining the hidden costs behind our ideas of beauty, success, and desire. This exhibition brings together works that blend captivating visuals with difficult truths, creating a space where attraction and harm coexist in uneasy balance. The artworks confront themes ranging from beauty standards and social media pressure to environmental injustice, public health concerns, and cultural toxicity. Some artists employ literal “toxic” materials or imagery, while others work metaphorically, revealing how harmful ideals seep quietly into daily life. Artists are especially encouraged to engage with issues and stories rooted in East Point, GA, and surrounding communities—local experiences, shared challenges, environmental concerns, and cultural impact—grounding the exhibition’s themes in lived reality and shared place. The exhibition is built on contrast: art that appears visually appealing at first, only to reveal a deeper, more unsettling reality. In this space, beauty is no longer innocent— it becomes a mirror, a warning, and an invitation to look deeper, encouraging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about themselves, their communities, and the planet. • Marshall Rancifer

Marshall Rancifer 2022 Ebon Dooley Honoree Economic Justice Champion Marshall Rancifer, lovingly known as the Street Angel , died in Sept. 10, 2022, leaving behind many years of tireless advocacy for Atlanta’s unhoused community. Through his Justice for All Coalition, Marshall helped innumerable homeless people get off the street; he estimated that over 25 years, he helped nearly 3,000 people find safe havens and new lives. Many of the people he helped were also substance addicted and he was there — often against city regulations — with food, hygiene kits, safe-sex kits, HIV/STD testing, referrals to detox programs, and assistance in getting documents like birth certificates for housing and employment services. Through unconditional love and an obsessive consistency, he fulfilled his covenant with God. Marshall had long ago recovered from addiction and living in the streets and promised God that if he was restored to his own personal fullness, he would work for the restoration of all of the “unsheltered,” as he called the homeless population. With his small band of volunteers, he did just that for a quarter of a century, enabling so many to escape sordid environments and extremely dangerous situations. • The Spotlight Series-An Evening of original 10 minute plays

01756a3a-e048-41a9-a62d-15e90f8ab0ed PRESS The Spotlight Series-An Evening of original 10 minute plays November 17, 2023 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEAS E THE SPOTLIGHT SERIES: AN EVENING OF ORIGINAL 10-MINUTE PLAYS Dec. 10 | 7 p.m. artsxchange.org/event-details/spotlight-series CONTACT: Angela Oliver, media@artsxchange.org , 404-624-4211 ArtsXchange sponsors evening of original plays by writers, actors formerly on strike The Spotlight Series to highlight injustices plaguing Atlanta EAST POINT, Ga. — Great ideas are often born through challenging times, says Chantal Maurice, actor and founder of CoStar Coaching . When the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists unions went on strike earlier this year, Maurice thought of an outlet for local strikers to keep their creativity in motion. “Artists struggle when they aren't able to exercise their gifts and talents,” she said. “The strike impacted artists mentally and financially, but The Spotlight Series allowed me to create something of purpose; a reason for artists to continue to create within the strike rules.” The Spotlight Series , an evening of seven original 10-minute plays by Atlanta-based writers, directors and producers, will debut at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Paul Robeson Theater at ArtsXchange, 2148 Newnan St. in East Point. The ArtsXchange is sponsoring the event as part of its Paul Robeson Theater Incubator program, which provides free performance space for independent and emerging playwrights who embody his legacy. A nine-year career in TV and film has connected Maurice to many. Thus, she was able to “network across,” a term Issa Rae coined, she said, to find writers, directors and producers. “Any opportunity that I get, I will always look to the left and right of me and push my peers forward,” Maurice said. The plays tackle various sociopolitical matters, especially those plaguing Atlanta. “Sibling’s Keeper,” written by Kim Akia, exposes various forms of sex trafficking and the plight of the rescuing process, with Atlanta following Washington, D.C. in the highest rates of human trafficking. “Mask Off," written by Kayla Bennett, explores the role news media play in creating negative narratives about marginalized communities. And Onaji Rouse’s "Getting Repped” highlights racial discrimination in the workplace. While The Spotlight Series began solely for creators, Maurice said it has evolved her goals, such as her plan to partner with corporate diversity and inclusion departments to create more inclusive workspaces, using theater to highlight equity issues. “Art is one of the most powerful tools in activism because it forces people to feel,” she said. “Theater has the power to evoke emotions and broaden perspectives. It can empower people to take action.” Tickets are $30 and are available online or at the door. ABOUT THE ARTSXCHANGE The ArtsXchange , d/b/a the Southeast Community Cultural Center, was incorporated in 1983 and opened The Arts Exchange In 1984 in Grant Park, reshaping the landscape of Metro Atlanta’s arts scene. Mausiki Scales and the Common Ground Collective — a local band with international reach — will play a concert at 8 p.m. June 24 in the Paul Robeson Theater at the ArtsXchange, 2148 Newnan St. in East Point. The collective will return to offer their free community workshop, “Blues People: The Music and Culture of African Americans,” open to all ages from 3-5 p.m. on June 25. In this free masterclass, Mausiki Scales and his guests will guide participants through an exploration of the intellectual and social origins of African American music — Black Folk music, Blues, Jazz, popular, religious and others — from its beginnings in Africa to its enculturation into the music of the Americas. Founded and led by Mausiki Scales, the Common Ground Collective, is a group of Atlanta-based musicians who have been working together since 1999. The band explores genres that reflect Africa and the African Diaspora including Afrobeat, Funk, Jazz, Soul, Blues and Hip Hop. With a commitment to performing that expands beyond mere entertainment, the band claims community healing as core to its mission. Mausiki Scales & Common Ground's sound concerns itself with the African ancestral musical arts, while being fully present in addressing contemporary experiences. They approach creativity with a high regard for music and they also act as active agents in maintaining an integral part of the sacred Black Music Tradition. • Dr. Janice Liddell

Dr. Janice Liddell 2022 Ebon Dooley Honoree Change Maker Dr. Janice Liddell’s lifetime of work in theater has uplifted Black women, exploded myths about Black people, and reclaimed their histories. Moved by the reporting of the 50th anniversary of the Lena Baker execution, Liddell initially sent her play, “Who Will Sing for Lena?” to various theaters royalty-free if viewers would sign a petition for the posthumous pardon of Lena Baker. 2,500 signatures were sent to the Georgia State Board of Pardon and Paroles, which influenced the pardon in 2005. The play has since been performed at festivals, theaters and schools from Atlanta, Denver and NYC to Edinburgh, Belize City and Monaco. Liddell retired after serving in several capacities at Clark Atlanta University for more than 35 years, and as assistant vice president for academic affairs and coordinator of faculty development at Atlanta Metropolitan College until 2015. She is co-editor of a collection of literary criticism, an author of several published articles and poems, and has had several plays produced nationally and internationally.
