- Shelia Turner and Sistagraphy
Shelia Turner and Sistagraphy 2018 Ebon Dooley Honoree Change Maker https://www.sistagraphy.com/ 1961 - 2018 In 1993, Shelia Turner , an Atlanta-based documentary photographer, wanted to create a vehicle for Black women photographers to exhibit their work. At the time, the world of photography was dominated by white males. There was no collective of Black women photographers documenting the stories of Black women. Shelia contacted nine photographers that she knew personally, and they all accepted her invitation. The inaugural exhibition garnered critical acclaim. The collective’s next exhibition was held in 1994 under its new name, Sistagraphy. Shelia passed away in 2018, but her commitment to the relevance and importance of photographic art created by African American women lives on. Sistagraphy encourages lifelong learning and promotes the art of photography through interpretive theme-based exhibitions, educational programs, and community outreach. - Brian Spears
Brian Spears 2021 Ebon Dooley Honoree Social Justice Champion Brian Spears , Attorney at Law, specializes in litigation involving governmental liability on a state and local level. He has knowledge and experience in the handling of cases involving civil rights, constitutional law, and police misconduct. He has built his law practice around fighting against violence and racism by law enforcement and by white supremacists. He has brought more lawsuits against the Ku Klux Klan than any other Georgia attorney—from Wrightsville to Albany, from Rome to Forsyth County. Mr. Spears has also supported peoples’ movements by providing defense to activists arrested when demanding an end to forcing homeless people out of downtown Atlanta, equal rights for persons with disabilities, equal educational opportunities, and an end to US support for apartheid in South Africa. He has worked towards the ending of US wars in Latin America. He has also worked for fair elections, affordable medical care (the Grady Coalition), and an end to corporate domination of our democracy (Occupy Wall Street, Atlanta). Spears is the former Vice President of the National Lawyers Guild, a founding member of the National Police Accountability Project—the largest lawyers organization specializing in police misconduct, a founding member of the Detroit-based Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice, and, for more than thirty years, he organized the annual Atlanta Civil Rights Litigation Seminar to train other lawyers to bring civil rights lawsuits. Brian is an attorney who does not back down from taking on the system firsthand to address issues governing police practices, civil rights and governmental liability and has also donated his legal skills to nonprofit organizations. He has practiced law for more than three decades and received rewards from the ACLU of Georgia, SCLC, NAACP, and the Georgia Lawyer Chapter. Brian represents the kind of social justice champions who are seldom celebrated, but essential to advancing justice in this nation. He is among those lawyers who are always ready to advise, support and defend the rights of protesters holding the line against economic and social attacks by those in power. About Us Our Programs Our Board Our Staff Our Funders Our Support Team Our History When the Southeast Community Cultural Center's board of directors incorporated and opened The Arts Exchange in 1983 it reshaped the landscape of the Metro Atlanta arts scene: This inner-city Artist colony/community arts center was an intentional effort to create fully integrated facility—multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary and inter-generational. Over the years we have been the place where individual artists could find performance or rehearsal space; and artists and community could find a wide range of classes. A gathering place for community events and social change efforts, and an in-town artist colony representing all disciplines of the arts traditional to the experimental. Our Mission We create, produce, present and provide arts and/or cultural services for the public, and represent art and artists from traditional to experimental. Our mission is to nourish the creativity and careers of black artists; expose the community to multiple cultural traditions; and provide resources to inspire new generations of patrons, artists, and other creatives. We are a place where individuals and artists gather to find a creative community, and share their work with the community at large. Our goal is to empower and support artists, community residents, and the public to actively engage in life-changing creative experiences. We promote and expand accessibility to the arts for those who have not traditionally had access to the arts. We partner with arts organizations, organizers, and collectives of artists to respond to the needs of our community. (SECCC) doing business as The Arts Exchange. They approached the Atlanta Board of Education in 1984 and requested to lease the closed Grant Park Elementary School. Within six months of opening The Arts Exchange was at full occupancy. This in-town artists colony included 14 multi-disciplinary artist studios, a recording studio, two galleries, two dance studios, and a full theatre/performing arts/music season. When The Arts Exchange opened, it reshaped the landscape of the Metro Atlanta arts scene. This inner-city artist colony/community arts center was an intentional effort to create a fully integrated facility—multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary and inter-generational. Over the years we have been the place where individual artists could find performance or rehearsal space; and artists and community could find a wide range of classes. We were a gathering place for community events and social change efforts, and an in-town artist colony representing all disciplines of the arts from traditional to the experimental. New home. New name. In 2016 we sold the property in Grant Park. Renovating and opening a new facility in East Point in December of 2018. The move to East Point was an intentional decision we made to be a part of a community that did not have access to a multifaceted arts facility like ours, with room for creative small businesses, community gathering spaces, and programs focused on education and wellness. Shortchange, is a new name reflecting our relocation to the southwest side of town in the former Jere Wells Elementary School in East Point. Since our grand opening on January 10, 2019, we have been an exemplary and unique center for community, civic, and arts engagement. We offer event and performance spaces, artist studios, classes, literary events, survival sessions for musicians and visual artists, wellness classes and more. Our programs include The Jack Sinclair Gallery, Charles “Jikki” Riley Memorial Library and Literacy Program, the Paul Robeson Theatre, a creative artists studio program, the Sinclair Gallery, Fresh Oasis Community Garden, and classes and workshops for the community. As we move into our 40th year, we are proud to have returned to our roots as a community-based organization dedicated to the enrichment of our community and service to those who live here. The ArtsXchange has a unique and independent place in the arts scene in Atlanta and Fulton County. More History
- Ballethnic
Ballethnic 2024 Ebon Dooley Honoree Bridge Builder info@ballethnic.org https://ballethnic.org Ballethnic Dance Company Inc. began with the love story of a young couple, Nena Gilreath and Waverly T. Lucas II, who met at the Dance Theatre of Harlem. On January 15, 1990, they successfully launched the second Black-founded professional ballet company and the first by a Black woman, creating another vehicle in the U.S. for dancers of color to be at the forefront. Today, the dance company is a classically trained, culturally diverse ballet company that blends traditional ballet with the artistic influences of other ethnic cultures – especially African American – to produce unique and exciting dance performances. - Jack Whitney Sinclair
Jack Whitney Sinclair Jack Sinclair Gallery Founder https://www.artsxchange.org/jack-sinclair-gallery Jack Whitney Sinclair , attended Georgia Tech (believed to have) and afterward was getting some notice as an installation sculpture artist and working increasing with old letterpresses. He started an underground artist studio known as the Mattress Factory in Little Five Points and then started the Jack Sinclair Letterpress Studio on Edgewood Ave. As artistic efforts, unfortunately, are not profitable, he and his wife Nancy closed their studio and relocated to Rio Rancho, New Mexico where his pursuit of Letterpress art continued. By his death, he had accumulated some 15 tons of Letterpresses, some of which turned out to be quite old and of some value. His wife Nancy donated the presses to the University of Arizona, where the Jack Sinclair Letterpress Studio is now an instructional part of the art department, now well known, and now produces graduates and works attributed to his named studio. In 1986 Jack Sinclair came to the Arts Exchange. He brought with him his formidable skills as a carpenter, his contacts, and letterpresses. Jack created our gallery space, worked on the theatre, taught me how to look after the massive boiler, and renovated the old cafeteria building it out with an incredible loft and other additions. Jack Sinclair was committed to the purpose of The Arts Exchange and excited to work with the gallery. The Board and Staff of the Arts Exchange are honored to re-dedicate and return to the name our first gallery the Sinclair Gallery at The Arts Exchange. OUR STAFF STUDIO ARTIST EBON DOOLEY HONOREES
