Signs of the Times Signs of the Times Documenting the Power of the People, 1960 - Today Sept. 15, 2020 - Oct. 31, 2020 CURATOR Lisa Tuttle ARTISTS Jim Alexander Davion Alston Sheila Pree Bright Dennis Morton Lynsey Weatherspoon With ages spanning five decades, the photographers in this exhibition - Jim Alexander , Davion Alston , Sheila Pree Bright , Dennis Morton , and Lynsey Weatherspoon - use their cameras to document grassroots racial and social justice advocacy - from the Civil Rights marches of the 1960s to today's Black Lives Matter demonstrations and police killings protests. This exhibition is curatorially focused on the texts, signs, and banners carried by participants. We will ask viewers to think about the ways that a practice combining activism and documentary photography has evolved over time? What is new in this digital age? What is the power of the photographic image to affect cultural shift? All of the photographers are currently Atlanta-based. On exhibit will be color/b&w photographs, installation, and video works. The Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African American History and Culture acquired four of Steve’s paintings as part of its Founding and Permanent Collection . This honor recognizes his work for its artistic and scholastic merit as well as its historical significance. In 2020, he was again honored to have his papers acquired by Emory University’s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library . He was also honored in 2019 to have two of his original paintings acquired by the Robert W. Woodruff Library at the Atlanta University Center. Acquisition by these institutions of higher learning is a further acknowledgment of the scholastic value of his work. Steve’s talent was first showcased before a world audience when he was commissioned to create “Uniting Colors of the World”, a mammoth eighty feet by twenty-eight feet mural, as the City of Atlanta’s “Official” commemoration of its hosting the 1996 Centennial Olympic Summer Games. In the entire world, he holds the singular honor a distinction of being “Official Artist” for the Host City of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Summer Games. The year of 2014 continued to expand the scope of Steve’s work. He continued to be involved with the Crown Jewel of Historically Black College & Universities Football Classics, the 40th & 41st Anniversary Bayou Classics. The Bayou Classic is contested each year between Grambling State University and Southern University, Baton Rouge in New Orleans, LA during the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend. Steve was honored to have his work displayed in London during the 2012 London Olympic Summer Games. His work was featured as part of the Art of the Olympians exhibition at the University College of London. He also created artwork live at the ANOCA Africa Village in Kensington Garden during the Games. In the Fall of 2010 Steve was honored by the Government of Brazil with an invitation to Rio de Janeiro to participate in the celebration of Zumbi dos Palmeras, a great hero in the liberation of Brazilian slaves, and as Guest of Honor for Black Consciousness Week. He presented his painting “O Jogo Bonito” (The Beautiful Game) to the Nation of Brazil in celebration of the 2014 World Cup. - Charmaine Minniefield
Charmaine Minniefield 2021 Ebon Dooley Honoree Economic Justice Champion Alumni Studio Artist Contact@PraiseHouseProject.org https://charmaineminniefield.com/ The work of Artist-Activist Charmaine Minniefield preserves Black narratives as a radical act of social justice. Firmly rooted in womanist social theory and ancestral veneration, her work draws from indigenous traditions as seen throughout Africa and the Diaspora, to explore African and African-American history, memory, and ritual as an intentional push back against erasure. Her creative practice is community-based as her research and resulting bodies of work often draw from the physical archives as she excavates the stories of African-American, women-led resistance and spirituality and power. Minniefield’s recent public works, which include projection mapping and site-specific installation, insight dialogue around race, class, and power. Recent projects include the Remembrance as Resistance: Preserving Black Narratives in Atlanta’s historic Oakland Cemetery which honored the over 800 unmarked graves recently discovered within the African-American Burial Grounds through the multimedia installation of a Praise House. Her Praise House Project went on to receive a prestigious Our Town Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Charmaine’s work is featured in several public and private collections, and as a muralist, her walls can be seen throughout the City of Atlanta and beyond. She was honored by Mercedes Benz as a part of their Greatness Lives Here campaign. She is featured in the 2020 US Census commercial with her recent mural in Brooklyn depicting women who shaped the future. Minniefield recently served as the Stuart A. Rose Library Artist-in-Residence at Emory University through a collaboration with Flux Projects and as the Curator of Elevate for the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. Charmaine has a long history of including other artists in her projects, to share funding opportunities, and to advocate on behalf of artists. Her determination to help artists, especially Black women artists, to become economically visible by sharing resources and opportunities that will help create change is powerful. Charmaine’s brilliance as an artist is unquestionable, but what has earned her this award is her attention to sharing economic opportunities and funding among other artists. This is such a cooperative and collaborative example that deserves special recognition since under capitalism, being an artist is often a solitary and self-promoting life. As a visual artist my work seeks to preserve Black narratives as a radical act of social justice. As an artist-activist, I intentionally push back against erasure, displacement, misrepresentation, and marginalization by reclaiming cultural histories in communities affected by gentrification. My work invokes the power of the ancestors. By creating visual roadmaps from the past to the present, paved by the history and stories, love and heartache, success and failures of the ancestors, it celebrates and calls to the present the wisdom of those who have come before to inspire a new freedom movement today. My work reclaims the stories of the ancestors as social iconography of my generation by creating shrine paintings, which present the ancestors as sacred symbols of freedom. I believe that by reclaiming the stories of our ancestors and by praising and committing to their memory, we will better understand our collective potential and ourselves as a society. - BronzeLens
BronzeLens 2023 Ebon Dooley Honoree Economic Justice Champion info@bronzelens.com https://bronzelens.com The BronzeLens Film Festival of Atlanta, Georgia is a non-profit organization, founded in 2009, that is dedicated to bringing national and worldwide attention to Atlanta as a center for film and film production for people of color. The mission of the BronzeLens Film Festival of Atlanta, Georgia is two fold: to promote Atlanta as the new film mecca for people of color; and to showcase films and provide networking opportunities that will develop the next generation of filmmakers. Over the last twelve years, BronzeLens has promoted the work of independent filmmakers of color from Atlanta, the Southeast region, the nation and the world. The growth is rooted in the high standards, in participation by leading Hollywood professionals (including partners like WarnerMedia, Turner, HBO, Universal Films, BET, VH1, Panavision, and ARRAY (an indie film releasing platform founded by BronzeLens honoree/Selma director Ava DuVernay) and in success stories derived from relationships started at BronzeLens. The BronzeLens Film Festival (BLFF) concept was originated by the President of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB), William Pate . He believed that with the growing number of films being made in Atlanta and Georgia, a destination festival focused on films made by African Americans would have an audience. Kathleen Bertrand, Sr. VP at ACVB at the time, was charged with doing a feasibility study. After meeting with other existing festivals geared to African Americans, she concluded that there could be a niche for a new festival and began the process of launching what was to become BronzeLens. ACVB incubated BLFF for its launch in 2010 and its next 5 festivals OUR STAFF STUDIO ARTIST EBON DOOLEY HONOREES
