Samuel , Timothy Short , Kristian Simone , Lisa Tuttle , Ric Washington , Kristan Woolford , Keith Yates EXHIBITION JUDGE Dr. Fahamu Pecou Dr. Fahamu Pecou is an interdisciplinary artist and scholar whose works combine observations on hip-hop, fine art and popular culture. Pecou’s paintings, performance art, and academic work addresses concerns around contemporary representations of Black men and how these images impact both the reading and performance of Black masculinity. Fahamu received his BFA at the Atlanta College of Art in 1997 and a Ph.D. from Emory University in 2018. Dr. Pecou exhibits his art worldwide in addition to lectures and speaking engagements at colleges and universities. ______________ “WHOSE AMERICA IS IT, ANYWAY?” seeks artists whose artwork addresses current racial, social and political struggles. This country is experiencing another period of greater racial consciousness and increased social, political and racial turbulence. Recent events have yet again shown the reality of the shifting power struggle that has been repeating in the country since its founding. How can we, as artists, create and present artwork that sparks critical thinking, empowers alternative narratives, and inspires ourselves and our communities to be more aware and compassionate to the struggle for equity and human rights in America and the world?     Search For Identity Search For Identity Photography by Tafawa June 18, 2022 - July 16, 2022 CURATOR / ARTIST Tafawa Hicks Black Tree Arts presents "Search for Identity," a photography exhibit by Tafawa Hicks June 11-July 16 | Opening reception and artist talk from 4-7 p.m. June 25 GALLERY HOURS: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. This exhibit runs June 11-July 16. The gallery is free and open to the public. In honor of his 75th birthday on June 18, resident artist & photographer Tafawa Hicks will share an exhibit of his journey throughout Africa & Haiti from 1974-1999. Tafawa Hicks is a Bessemer, Alabama native, longtime Atlantan, and photographer, printer and custom picture framer who has a studio at the ArtsXchange. His creative instincts around photographing, printing, exhibiting and preserving African and African American imagery continue to evolve. In the sense that all art is an expression of creative Spirit presenting itself as inspiration through each of us, I am an artist using the camera as creative expression," he says. What began as a dance class for a small group of girls at Stewart Avenue Women and Children’s Shelter has blossomed into a large and diverse organization with dedicated alumni, a world class theater, the Beam, and is a beacon of hope, a destination for dance, and a portal for change that reaches over 350 children every week across Atlanta.     Oronike Odeleye 2020 Ebon Dooley Honoree Change Maker Oronike Odeleye is a freelance Arts & Entertainment consultant who has worked with a range of clients including ONE Musicfest, The National Black Arts Festival, The Annie B Casey Foundation, American Express, The Atlanta Hawks, and The City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office. In 2017 she co-founded the #MuteRKelly campaign to advocate for the black community's divestment from accused serial sexual abuser, R. Kelly. Through her work over the past 2 years, the #MuteRKelly campaign has gotten 16 concerts canceled in the US and abroad, held protest rallies in 8 cities, had his music downgraded from streaming platforms and banned from radio stations across the nation, gotten RCA to end his recording contract, and has seen charges brought against him by the FBI and Chicago PD, and investigations launched in Atlanta, GA and Detroit, Michigan. Most importantly, her work has sparked conversations around the nation about sexual abuse in the #MeToo era, childhood sexual abuse in the Black community, and the politics of race, wealth and fame in bringing abusers to justice. Oronike was featured in the explosive Lifetime docu-series, Surviving R Kelly, and has been interviewed on-air and in print by publications worldwide including The New York Times, The Roland Martin Show, NPR, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Rolling Stone, BBC, and The Root, as well as on countless radio stations and podcasts. She has lectured nationwide about the #MuteRKelly campaign, social media activism, rape culture, race and gender politics in intersectional feminisim, childhood sexual abuse in the Black Community, and modern ideas around female sexuality at Morehouse College, Norfolk State University, Princeton University, and Syracuse University. In 2019, Oronike was honored as one of OkayAfrica's 100 Women, celebrating women from Africa and the Diaspora disrupting the status quo. In April 2019 she was honored with the Activist Impact Award at the Breakthrough Inspiration Awards in NYC. In May of the same year she received the Visionary Champions award at Resilience's Evening of Impact in Chicago, IL. Most recently she was named the #5 Most Influential African American 25-45 years old on the Root 100 2019 list which honors the innovators, the leaders, the public figures and game changers whose work from the past year is breaking down barriers and paving the way for the next generation.     Tasnim Mosabber 2018 Ebon Dooley Honoree Emerging Leader https://www.facebook.com/aitazzy Tasnim Mosabber is a visual artist who has demonstrated a history of using her platform to amplify issues and bring visibility to communities striving for justice. She began her journey in activism as president of her high school chapter of Amnesty International, for which she organized a fundraiser to help people impacted by the 2008 earthquake in Haiti. In college she worked with Planned Parenthood Federation and Get Covered America in their joint campaign to ensure that immigrants and low income people of color have access to affordable health insurance. Tasnim is currently the outreach coordinator for Raksha, Inc., an organization that works with South Asian survivors of domestic, sexual, and other violent crimes.     Dianne Mathiowetz 2018 Ebon Dooley Honoree Social Justice Champion https://www.facebook.com/dianne.mathiowetz Dianne Mathiowetz has been engaged in the struggle for social and economic justice for over 50 years. Anti-racist activist, workers’ rights advocate, anti-imperialist organizer, reproductive rights defender and community radio producer and host, Dianne credits her longevity in revolutionary change to her membership in Workers World Party. She has acted in solidarity with immigrants and refugees everywhere, incarcerated workers behind bars, political prisoners, LGBTQ2+ communities, environmentalists in defense of the planet, abortion and women's healthcare providers, housing activists and cultural workers. Women's Action for New Directions (WAND), Freedom University, Grandmothers for Peace, Dominican College, and the Nipponza Myohoji Atlanta Dojo have honored Dianne for her dedication to peace, equality and liberation. She received the inaugural Ebon Dooley Social Justice Champion award in 2018 from the ArtsXchange. Currently, Dianne is the vice-president of the Board of WRFG 89.3FM, as well as coordinator of both the Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition and International Action Center. She produces and co-hosts the weekly Labor Forum program on WRFG. Dianne appreciates and marvels at all the remarkable people who have enriched her life, educated her and sustained her to remain confident that "a better world is in birth.
