Curator’s Statement:

The work of Sean Haynes emerges on the cusp of contemporary interdimensional linear form. His work is powerful in its combustive, colorful reasoning yet subtle in its subliminal symbolism. I find the motifs within his Urban Spirits series weaving throughout Sean’s body of work in this exhibition. Notably, the signature piece, “Making Moves” 2015, is emblematic of Sean’s integration of profile figures amidst waves of color-in-motion, with the addition of more complete silhouettes with stylized hair, now including braids. Additionally, the intricate multi-dimensional aspects of his craftsmanship are heightened with the inclusion of perpendicular faces on “Urban Flow: Light in the Darkness” 2023, which is approaching the three-dimensional characteristics that he explores in the delicately poised, encased vessels “Peace Flower #1 and #2 compositions.

Haynes’ expressive and generous use of color is matched with his adept wood craftmanship skills. The intricate, interweaving logic displayed in the work, is a testament to Haynes’ years of study mastering his craft. He sees beyond what the obvious limitations of the material would be and artfully bends it to his will.

Haynes’ works such as, "Yebo, Sawubona" and “Hoping for Praise, and Praising for Hope” blend well with the “Spirit Tree” series in the exhibit.  "Yebo, Sawubona” is an ancient Zulu phrase that means "Yes, I see you"It's a common response to the Zulu greeting "Sawubona", which also means "I see you". " This familial embrace underscores Haynes’ desire for peace and unity throughout his Journey of the Spirit.
