Heavy Clouds Heavy Clouds A Solo Exhibition from C Flux Sing Dec. 14th, 2019- Jan. 18th, 2020 CURATOR Courtney Brooks ARTIST C. Flux Sing While hundreds of clubgoers danced to the infectious rhythms honoring the African music legend Fela Kuti, there was also a large crowd incredibly standing still gawking at the live artwork being created by Atlanta-based artist Craig “Flux” Singleton aka C. Flux Sing . Using marker and acrylic paint, Sing’s amalgam of pastels and primary colors bordered by bold black lines collectively tell the story of the Black struggle, unity, humor, beauty… Somehow he takes themes from opposite extremes and vibrantly fuses them together to create masterpieces that quickly are purchased to adorn walls throughout the U.S. Whether it’s a hipster or an executive of a major corporation, a growing legion of admires are happily supporting C. Flux Sing’s amazing work. An import from Laurelton, New York, Mr. Sing has made Atlanta his home for more than a decade. However, getting his just recognition as one of the city’s most revered artists took patience. Currently, Georgia’s capital is taking on a revolutionary stance by finally embracing art in all its facets; in particular, Sing’s penchant for using vibrant color schemes which captivatingly tell the true story of the Black experience. But while he shines as a fine artist who consistently sells his artwork during exhibits including the globetrotting Art, Beats + Lyrics, “24 Reasons to Live”, I’m A Beast, and other productions which strive on showcasing particularly urban art created by the avant-garde, Sing refuses to be pigeonholed. Major corporations including Boost Mobile, And 1, Scion, and New Balance regularly hire him and his effortless grasp for graphic design, print media, and branding. So is there a way to describe Sing’s style? “I could never define what my style is,” Sing says after deep thought. “It’s continuously changing due to my self-growth and inspiration. I get bored easily so I am always driven to do something new that pushes the boundaries. I am inspired by comic strips, comic books, graffiti, abstract, graphic design, urban decay, surrealism and people; these are things that change randomly so there is always something new to create.” Although Sing’s creativity can be fueled from numerous outside sources and appear impulsive, his goals are very solid and leave no room for debate. “I really want to travel and spread my fine arts across the world,” he unveils. “I want to do large conceptual installations that inspire change; especially murals. It would be great to do it by myself, but I am equally open to do it with a union of artists.” Laughing, he concludes, “The end result is I really want to inspire children. It may sound cliché, but they truly represent the future. No one can argue that.” So whether it’s heading a new branding project for a major corporation based in a skyscraper in Atlanta’s bustling Midtown business district, or adorning a side of a building in Nairobi with a vibrant mural promoting self-determination, C.Flux Sing will always have an audience who will appreciate art that comes from the heart. POST by Thomas Bess POST Solo Exhibit by Thomas Bess Nov 02, 2024 - Dec 21,2024 Curator Rayfield Lewis Featured Artist Thomas Bess Experience a captivating exploration of the fleeting and ever-changing nature of our world through the eyes of an Artist, Thomas Bess. This collection showcases thought provoking works that reflect his deep engagement with critical theory and the concept of recycling nature. A Statement from the Artist “My work explores the relationship between Critical theory and recycling culture. With influences as diverse as Derrida and Miles Davis, new synergies are manufactured from both constructed and discovered dialogues. Ever since I was a teenager I have been fascinated by the ephemeral nature of the moment. What starts out as hope soon becomes corroded into a dialectic of greed, leaving only a sense of decadence and the inevitability of a new order. As spatial phenomena become transformed through diligent and critical practice, the viewer is left with an insight into the darkness of our world.” -Thomas Bess Jr. Artist Bio Thom Bess specializes in collage style paintings and drawings. Influenced by Picasso, Romere Bearden, and Stephanie Jackson, Bess’s work has been described as mystical, darkly funny, challenging, and uplifting. He was raised in the small town of Gray, Georgia with strong Christian values and all the contradictions of the American South. Following a near death experience at 18, Bess began splitting his time between Jamaica and Amsterdam where he began studying African-centered metaphysics and, ironically, began to channel his very American experiences onto canvas. Returning to the U.S. in 2008, Bess started creating wall projections for small gatherings of friends in a newly re-emerging party and arts scene in Atlanta depicting cult pop culture icons, literary figures, and people he encountered at a local coffee shop. He currently lives and works in Atlanta. Hardy, GW Harper, Marlon Hitchcock, Debra Renee Jeter, Melinda Lampkin, Arthur Moore, Marilyn Ocasio Nieves, Clarrissa Octavia Pettijohn, Corrina Sephora, WADDY , Camil Williams and Keith Yates VIRTUAL TOUR Scattering Dreams is a curated exhibition exploring issues of global immigration, refugee crisis and the violence immigrants and refugees often face. The Juried Awardees 1st - Corrina Sephora - Uprooted 2nd - Chloe Alexander - Bienvenindos 3rd - Amir Hamer - Amazihg “Scattering Dreams” seeks artists whose artwork addresses global immigration and refugee crisis. Every day, we are bombarded with news stories and images from around the world of immigration, citizenship, asylum seekers, refugees, detention and deportation. There are over 43 million refugees in the world today, the largest number in history. In Georgia, ten percent of the state’s population was born in another country, while 1 in 13 Georgians is a native-born U.S. citizen with at least one immigrant parent. How can we, as artists, create and present artwork that sparks critical thinking, empowers alternative narratives, and inspires ourselves and our communities to be more aware and compassionate to the plight of people – often our neighbors - caught in these political and environmental crises? Unlike recycling, which breaks down materials for reuse, upcycling elevates them, turning waste into something of greater value. Upcycled art is more than a creative practice—it’s a powerful statement on sustainability. By transforming discarded materials into thought-provoking works, artists can shed light on environmental issues, encourage sustainable habits, and inspire meaningful change. Upcycling not only reduces waste and conserves resources but also challenges us to see beauty and potential in what others might throw away. ABOUT EXHIBIT JUDGE Dr. Danny B. Campbell Dr. Danny B. Thru the Lens Thru the Lens A reflection of life by mixed media artist Maceo Rogers April 30, 2022 - May 31, 2022 CURATOR / ARTIST Maceo Rogers Thru the Lens - Opening Reception Saturday, April 30th 2022 6PM-9PM ArtsXchange 2148 Newnan Street, East Point , GA 30344 A three hour art opening and reception showcasing, acrylic, dirt, and mixed media paintings by the artist Maceo Rogers. RSVP ______________________ Maceo Rogers Maceo was born in the small town of Edison, Georgia and grew up in rural Cuthbert, GA. Rogers began painting imagery of his environment such as old barns and rusted shacks within the rural setting. The first painting he sold netted $20, which triggered excitement and joy in that someone would pay money for his work. It wasn’t until he began attending arts and crafts shows around Southwest Georgia that his exposure to styles and artist techniques broaden his creative horizon. It was during his high school years while attending the Governor’s Honor Program in North Georgia that he got even more exposure to a lot of different mediums that would provide for greater experiments. After high school, Rogers attended the Atlanta College of Art, where he earned a BFA Degree in Visual Communications. Much of his work today consists of life experiences involving a wide range of subject matters. Maceo uses a number of different mediums including acrylic and oil paints, watercolors, pastels, dirt, pen and ink and charcoal to maximize creativity. Realism, Surrealism and Abstraction are core focuses of many of his paintings. Maceo has taught art classes at Fort Valley State University, Fort Valley, Georgia and around Atlanta, Georgia. He continues to mass market reproductions of his art. He’s received national recognition from such publications as True Imaging Magazine, Upscale Magazine, and Images Magazine, for his work. In addition, Maceo earned a CEcD in Economic Development, a graduate of Leadership DeKalb, Regional Leadership Institute, and a martial arts instructor in Cuong Nhu Oriental Martial Arts in Atlanta, GA. Maceo, his wife Sharon and their son Alexander live in Decatur, Georgia. About Us Our Programs Our Board Our Staff Our Funders Our Support Team Our History When the Southeast Community Cultural Center's board of directors incorporated and opened The Arts Exchange in 1983 it reshaped the landscape of the Metro Atlanta arts scene: This inner-city Artist colony/community arts center was an intentional effort to create fully integrated facility—multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary and inter-generational. Over the years we have been the place where individual artists could find performance or rehearsal space; and artists and community could find a wide range of classes. A gathering place for community events and social change efforts, and an in-town artist colony representing all disciplines of the arts traditional to the experimental. Our Mission We create, produce, present and provide arts and/or cultural services for the public, and represent art and artists from traditional to experimental. Our mission is to nourish the creativity and careers of black artists; expose the community to multiple cultural traditions; and provide resources to inspire new generations of patrons, artists, and other creatives. We are a place where individuals and artists gather to find a creative community, and share their work with the community at large. Our goal is to empower and support artists, community residents, and the public to actively engage in life-changing creative experiences. We promote and expand accessibility to the arts for those who have not traditionally had access to the arts. We partner with arts organizations, organizers, and collectives of artists to respond to the needs of our community. Within six months of opening The Arts Exchange was at full occupancy. This in-town artists colony included 14 multi-disciplinary artist studios, a recording studio, two galleries, two dance studios, and a full theatre/performing arts/music season. New name. In 2016 we sold the property in Grant Park. Renovating and opening a new facility in East Point in December of 2018. The move to East Point was an intentional decision we made to be a part of a community that did not have access to a multifaceted arts facility like ours, with room for creative small businesses, community gathering spaces, and programs focused on education and wellness. Shortchange, is a new name reflecting our relocation to the southwest side of town in the former Jere Wells Elementary School in East Point. Since our grand opening on January 10, 2019, we have been an exemplary and unique center for community, civic, and arts engagement. We offer event and performance spaces, artist studios, classes, literary events, survival sessions for musicians and visual artists, wellness classes and more. Our programs include The Jack Sinclair Gallery, Charles “Jikki” Riley Memorial Library and Literacy Program, the Paul Robeson Theatre, a creative artists studio program, the Sinclair Gallery, Fresh Oasis Community Garden, and classes and workshops for the community. As we move into our 40th year, we are proud to have returned to our roots as a community-based organization dedicated to the enrichment of our community and service to those who live here. The ArtsXchange has a unique and independent place in the arts scene in Atlanta and Fulton County. More History
