- HOW I SEE WHAT I SAW
HOW I SEE WHAT I SAW HOW I SEE WHAT I SAW The Definitive Artwork of Vernon Robinson Sr. Mar 1, 2021 - Apr 4, 2021 CURATOR Ric Washington ARTIST Vernon Robinson Sr. For over 40 years, Robinson Sr. painted and sculpted a remarkable collection of work driven by his knowledge that he has a gift to create and the freedom to express his ideas in all kinds of media. He admits that he enjoys creating but also that he has a need to create. His work is rich in color, powerful in visual rhythm and organic shapes. The curator, RIchard Washington, describes Roibinson’s work as “innate, naturally resonating with African forms of expression”. Robinson himself recalls a childhood memory of being inspired by a pencil drawing of a [African] Benin Mask that showed ornate symmetry and precision. Robinson Sr. has devoted his time to painting and sculptural art with a desire not only to express the excitement generated by what he sees in the world around him but to stimulate in viewers of his work that same visual excitement. This exhibition is truly a definitive representation of Vernon Robinson’s mantra, “HOW I SEE WHAT I SAW. - TO THE WOMEN I LOVE
TO THE WOMEN I LOVE TO THE WOMEN I LOVE A Solo Exhibition - John Glover Oct 8, 2021 – Nov 12, 2021 CURATOR Ray Lewis ARTIST John Glover About the Artist John Glover (b. 1969) has been a practicing artist for 30 years. While his work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, John Glover: To the Women I Love is his solo exhibition debut. Glover’s most successful project to date, 100 Years of Thought , is a series of charcoal portraits of elders. While charcoal is the artist’s preferred medium, To the Women I Love diverges from this with colorful acrylic silhouettes, each representing women that significantly impacted his life. To the Women I Love is a personal memoir engaging the artist’s complicated relationship with his father, experiences as the only son in a family of six sisters, and observations as his mother led the family following his father’s untimely death. The series also documents Glover’s relationships with his daughter and former wife. These experiences not only shaped Glover’s perspectives of women, but the artist’s broader worldview. - POST by Thomas Bess
POST by Thomas Bess POST Solo Exhibit by Thomas Bess Nov 02, 2024 - Dec 21,2024 Curator Rayfield Lewis Featured Artist Thomas Bess Experience a captivating exploration of the fleeting and ever-changing nature of our world through the eyes of an Artist, Thomas Bess. This collection showcases thought provoking works that reflect his deep engagement with critical theory and the concept of recycling nature. A Statement from the Artist “My work explores the relationship between Critical theory and recycling culture. With influences as diverse as Derrida and Miles Davis, new synergies are manufactured from both constructed and discovered dialogues. Ever since I was a teenager I have been fascinated by the ephemeral nature of the moment. What starts out as hope soon becomes corroded into a dialectic of greed, leaving only a sense of decadence and the inevitability of a new order. As spatial phenomena become transformed through diligent and critical practice, the viewer is left with an insight into the darkness of our world.” -Thomas Bess Jr. Artist Bio Thom Bess specializes in collage style paintings and drawings. Influenced by Picasso, Romere Bearden, and Stephanie Jackson, Bess’s work has been described as mystical, darkly funny, challenging, and uplifting. He was raised in the small town of Gray, Georgia with strong Christian values and all the contradictions of the American South. Following a near death experience at 18, Bess began splitting his time between Jamaica and Amsterdam where he began studying African-centered metaphysics and, ironically, began to channel his very American experiences onto canvas. Returning to the U.S. in 2008, Bess started creating wall projections for small gatherings of friends in a newly re-emerging party and arts scene in Atlanta depicting cult pop culture icons, literary figures, and people he encountered at a local coffee shop. He currently lives and works in Atlanta. For artist and curator Lisa Tuttle, this exhibition of multi-generational women artists represents an unique contribution to Metro Atlanta’s art history, as well as a gathering of many women artists and colleagues who have inspired her to remain committed to the creative life. The title comes from the writings of Virginia Woolf, “A Room of One's Own,” first published in September 1929. The work is based on two lectures Woolf delivered in October 1928 at Newnham College and Girton College, women's colleges at the University of Cambridge. In her essay, Woolf uses metaphors to explore social injustices and comments on women's lack of free expression and recognition as creatives. "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." Tuttle feels the same idea is valid in terms of women visual artists and their studios. Tuttle writes, “ At 72, I find it is increasingly important to put my energies into formalizing records about my own work, and that of other artists I know as well. I have seen influential artists’ work fade from memory. Organizing this exhibition of the diverse women artists is to honor the work of some remarkable colleagues, each of whom has taught me something along the way. Some had studios at the Arts Exchange before I became a tenant, and others I knew to varying degrees over the 23 years I had a studio at the Arts Exchange building in Grant Park. And now, I can bring them together with the women artists who have, or have had, studios in our beautiful new building in East Point.” Planned as part of the ArtsXchange’s 40th Anniversary celebration, this exhibition will both document, and place into context the wide variety of individual women artists who have worked in our buildings over the last 40 years. The gallery program is the longest continually running program at the Arts Exchange/ArtsXchange, and several of these women have played important roles in the Gallery Committee over the years. Against the backdrop of a looming extinction crisis, this juried art exhibition dares to shine a spotlight on the often-overlooked marvels of flora and fauna, urging us to rekindle our connection with the natural world. “The ArtsXchange invites artists to channel their creativity into a celebration of plants, pollinators, and the habitats they call home. From delicate wildflowers to towering trees, from bustling beehives to the flutter of butterfly wings, each artwork serves as a testament to the beauty, resilience, and interconnectedness of life on Earth. At the heart of this exhibition lies a powerful message—a plea to combat the phenomenon of “plant blindness” that plagues modern society. Through captivating visuals and thought-provoking narratives, “The Pollinators” seeks to awaken the dormant appreciation for the vital role that plants play in sustaining our existence. But “The Pollinators” is more than just an exhibition—it’s a call to arms, a rallying cry for collective action in the face of environmental degradation. As you wander through the gallery, let each artwork serve as a reminder of our shared responsibility to nurture and protect the precious web of life that sustains us all. Join us in celebrating the beauty and resilience of plants, pollinators, and habitats at the ArtsXchange where art becomes a powerful catalyst for social and environmental change.
