  • Charmaine Minniefield

Charmaine Minniefield 2021 Ebon Dooley Honoree Economic Justice Champion Alumni Studio Artist Contact@PraiseHouseProject.org https://charmaineminniefield.com/ The work of Artist-Activist Charmaine Minniefield preserves Black narratives as a radical act of social justice. Firmly rooted in womanist social theory and ancestral veneration, her work draws from indigenous traditions as seen throughout Africa and the Diaspora, to explore African and African-American history, memory, and ritual as an intentional push back against erasure. Her creative practice is community-based as her research and resulting bodies of work often draw from the physical archives as she excavates the stories of African-American, women-led resistance and spirituality and power. Minniefield’s recent public works, which include projection mapping and site-specific installation, insight dialogue around race, class, and power. Recent projects include the Remembrance as Resistance: Preserving Black Narratives in Atlanta’s historic Oakland Cemetery which honored the over 800 unmarked graves recently discovered within the African-American Burial Grounds through the multimedia installation of a Praise House. Her Praise House Project went on to receive a prestigious Our Town Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Charmaine’s work is featured in several public and private collections, and as a muralist, her walls can be seen throughout the City of Atlanta and beyond. She was honored by Mercedes Benz as a part of their Greatness Lives Here campaign. She is featured in the 2020 US Census commercial with her recent mural in Brooklyn depicting women who shaped the future. Minniefield recently served as the Stuart A. Rose Library Artist-in-Residence at Emory University through a collaboration with Flux Projects and as the Curator of Elevate for the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. Charmaine has a long history of including other artists in her projects, to share funding opportunities, and to advocate on behalf of artists. Her determination to help artists, especially Black women artists, to become economically visible by sharing resources and opportunities that will help create change is powerful. Charmaine’s brilliance as an artist is unquestionable, but what has earned her this award is her attention to sharing economic opportunities and funding among other artists. This is such a cooperative and collaborative example that deserves special recognition since under capitalism, being an artist is often a solitary and self-promoting life. As a visual artist my work seeks to preserve Black narratives as a radical act of social justice. As an artist-activist, I intentionally push back against erasure, displacement, misrepresentation, and marginalization by reclaiming cultural histories in communities affected by gentrification. My work invokes the power of the ancestors. By creating visual roadmaps from the past to the present, paved by the history and stories, love and heartache, success and failures of the ancestors, it celebrates and calls to the present the wisdom of those who have come before to inspire a new freedom movement today. My work reclaims the stories of the ancestors as social iconography of my generation by creating shrine paintings, which present the ancestors as sacred symbols of freedom. I believe that by reclaiming the stories of our ancestors and by praising and committing to their memory, we will better understand our collective potential and ourselves as a society. Through various mediums, the participating artists engage with themes of identity, resilience, and cultural heritage. We believe that “Hold The Line” is not just an art exhibition but a powerful statement about the strength, creativity, and resilience of Black men. The phrase “Hold the Line” alludes to a military tactic, in which a line of troops was supposed to hold strong to prevent an enemy breakthrough. An all-male assembly of some of Atlanta’s most talented black male artists will draw and hold said “line” using a wide array of visual styles, techniques, and mediums. A Statement from the Curators Brian Hebert and rEN Dillard The phrase “Hold the Line” alludes to a military tactic, in which a line of troops was supposed to hold strong to prevent an enemy breakthrough. An all-male assembly of some of Atlanta’s most talented black male artists will draw and hold said line using a wide array of visual styles, techniques, and mediums. Black men… men in general, need to have a healthy or balanced sense of masculinity. Men who are more connected with their emotions will experience increased life satisfaction, self-esteem, and decreased rates of mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. The Hold the Line Exhibition aims to create a healthy dialog around this heavily debated subject. Exhibit Prospectus: Toxic masculinity refers to the notion that some people’s idea of “manliness” perpetuates domination, homophobia, and aggression. The idea that men need to act tough and avoid showing all emotions can be harmful to a man’s mental health and can have serious consequences for society, which is how it became known as “toxic masculinity.” Toxic masculinity can be defined as “the need to aggressively compete and dominate others. It encompasses the most problematic proclivities in men as a sub-species. The socialization of boys in patriarchal societies often normalizes violence, such as in the saying “boys will be boys” about bullying and aggression while simultaneously championing negative traits such as insensitivity, over-competitiveness, and being unwilling to admit weakness. Black toxic masculinity is a unique dynamic that has roots in white supremacy and internalized racism. It is much more nuanced. Some say it is a direct symptom of the humiliation and terror that black men have endured throughout America’s history. There are many definitions of “toxic masculinity” that appear in research as well as pop culture. According to the Law of Diminishing Returns, the value we get from a consistent investment of energy begins to decrease at a certain point. Can trying so hard to eliminate the negative or “toxic” traits of masculinity be taken too far? Is there a danger in gutting the worse aspects of masculinity, we also deconstruct the traits responsible for energizing the engine of a stable society? Is there a real risk of throwing the baby out with the bath water? There is a growing ground swell of people who are beginning to question whether the negative aspects of such an aggressive collective campaign will ultimately outweigh the positives. At what point do even the positive characteristics of masculinity like protectiveness, leadership, and just being a simple problem solver become labeled as toxic? POST by Thomas Bess POST Solo Exhibit by Thomas Bess Nov 02, 2024 - Dec 21,2024 Curator Rayfield Lewis Featured Artist Thomas Bess Experience a captivating exploration of the fleeting and ever-changing nature of our world through the eyes of an Artist, Thomas Bess. This collection showcases thought provoking works that reflect his deep engagement with critical theory and the concept of recycling nature. A Statement from the Artist “My work explores the relationship between Critical theory and recycling culture. With influences as diverse as Derrida and Miles Davis, new synergies are manufactured from both constructed and discovered dialogues. Ever since I was a teenager I have been fascinated by the ephemeral nature of the moment. What starts out as hope soon becomes corroded into a dialectic of greed, leaving only a sense of decadence and the inevitability of a new order. As spatial phenomena become transformed through diligent and critical practice, the viewer is left with an insight into the darkness of our world.” -Thomas Bess Jr. Artist Bio Thom Bess specializes in collage style paintings and drawings. Influenced by Picasso, Romere Bearden, and Stephanie Jackson, Bess’s work has been described as mystical, darkly funny, challenging, and uplifting. He was raised in the small town of Gray, Georgia with strong Christian values and all the contradictions of the American South. Following a near death experience at 18, Bess began splitting his time between Jamaica and Amsterdam where he began studying African-centered metaphysics and, ironically, began to channel his very American experiences onto canvas. Returning to the U.S. in 2008, Bess started creating wall projections for small gatherings of friends in a newly re-emerging party and arts scene in Atlanta depicting cult pop culture icons, literary figures, and people he encountered at a local coffee shop. He currently lives and works in Atlanta.
