"Telling Stories Through the Lens: A Photography Series for  Visual Literacy"

A photography class series designed to explore the power of visual storytelling. Through hands-on instruction, creative  assignments, and peer collaboration, students will learn not only how to use their cameras but  also how to craft meaningful narratives that reflect their experiences, cultures, and communities.

The series is centered around the idea that photography is a language—a way of reading the  world and writing our place within it. Each week introduces both technical skills and  storytelling principles that students build on as they develop a personal photo essay. Topics  include light and composition, emotion in imagery, identity and visual voice, documentary  photography, and photo sequencing for impact. In addition, we’ll explore how captions and  context shape viewer interpretation and meaning.

Classe will also study contemporary and historical photographers who use images to tell powerful,  human stories—Gordon Parks, Zun Lee, and others.

The course culminates in a student-led exhibit where participants present a completed photo essay. This public showcase invites community members to engage with the stories shared and  creates a real-world platform for student voices to be seen and heard.

This class is for:

Beginner to intermediate photographers with an interest in  storytelling and community documentation. Teens and adults,  ages 18 + , with a focus on BIPOC and underrepresented  community voices.

From Instuctor Chanda M. Scott

I seek to capture the profound and intimate narratives that define the human experience through my lens. My photography is a journey into the lives of individuals from diverse backgrounds, revealing the stories that often go untold. Each image I create explores identity, emotion, and connection, aiming to bridge the gap between the viewer and the subject. My work is deeply rooted in authenticity and empathy. I don't just photograph my subjects; I immerse myself in their lives, striving to understand their worlds from within. This approach allows me to present a visual representation and a genuine and nuanced portrayal of their experiences. Whether it's a fleeting moment of joy, a moment of struggle, or the everyday rituals that shape their lives, my goal is to convey the essence of each subject with respect and sincerity. Photography is more than just a medium; it is a tool for storytelling and social reflection. Through careful composition and thoughtful observation, I aim to highlight the universal aspects of human existence while celebrating each person's unique individuality. My work invites viewers to engage with the images personally, encouraging a deeper understanding and empathy for the stories behind the faces. In documenting these lives, my ultimate goal is to foster a sense of connection and shared humanity. By presenting these stories, I strive to challenge perceptions, provoke thought, and ultimately create a space where the complexities and beauties of human life can be appreciated and celebrated. We can bridge diverse experiences and perspectives by sharing these narratives, uniting us in our shared humanity.
