Building Bridges: An International Women’s Day Celebration | 6-8 pm | March 14 | Paul Robeson Theater @ ArtsXchange
We will honor International Women’s Day with a discussion on the vital role women have in building bridges of solidarity & action across the globe — from artistic endeavors to social activism to business. Panelists: Dr. Elizabeth Elango, CEO of Global Village Project • Dr. Crystal LaVoulle, CEO of LaVoulle International Literacy Group • Shebah Toma, Executive Director of Tomafit. Moderated by Dr. Janita Poe.
This event is the second in our Community Conversations series, which is from 6-8 p.m. on the second Thursday each month.
ABOUT THE PANELISTS:
Dr. Elizabeth Elango, CEO of Global Village Project, previously served as the CEO of Junior Achievement Africa for five years. She also ran the largest division of Africa programming for 15 years as former VP at Heifer International. A native of Cameroon, Elizabeth holds a Master of Arts in African Studies from Yale University and Bachelor of Arts in International Relations & Affairs from Kennesaw State University. Affairs from Kennesaw State University.
Dr. Crystal LaVoulle, CEO of LaVoulle International Literacy Group, is an international education consultant who em powers educators to recognize their unique racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds as avenues for enhancing their teaching practices. She is also the author of "Teaching with Diversity & Cultural Competence in Mind: Using Popular Culture Texts to Teach Social Justice" and "Read, Write, Rhyme Institute: Educators, Entertainers, & Entrepreneurs Engaging in Hip-Hop Discourse.
Shebah Toma, co-founder and executive director of Toma Fit, hails from East Los Angeles and now lives in Atlanta, with her partner Quic and daughter Neptune. Toma Fit, a nonprofit, serves the community through the movement arts, namely, via breakin' and yoga. Shebah is a former educator, a published
poet, a hatha yoga practitioner, and devoted mental health and wellness advocate.
Dr. Janita Poe joined the Southern Region Education Board in 2023 as news manager. A veteran award-winning journalist & global educator who was raised in Atlanta, Janita has worked as a staff reporter & bureau chief for six news organizations, including the Chicago Tribune, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and AL.com in Montgomery. The Florida State University & UGA alumna also earned a Ph.D. in communication from Georgia State University.
