Black Lives Matter/ Black Art Matters

Project description:

 

As part of our ongoing mission to promote art and social justice, and to respond with immediacy to current transformative global Black Lives Matter movement, the ArtsXchange  will commission four murals along the south façade of our building’s exterior.  

 

We are calling individual artists/muralists, either individually or in collaborative teams with other artists or writers, to submit their ideas. We are seeking images and texts which depict inspirational Art and Social Justice cultural leaders (known or unknown), thoughts and/or aspirations.

 

Each mural artist/team will be awarded a $1,000 budget, to be inclusive of all artist fees, materials, scaffolding, and other expenses of completing the mural.

 

Each mural panel (see photos) is 10.5 feet Wide x 6.5 feet High.

Requirements for submissions

Please submit the following, as a single PDF:

1) One page (8.5”x 11”) to include:

  • Artist(s) contact information, including email, phone, social media handles, and website

  • Title and brief narrative about the proposed imagery or text.

  • Itemized list of paint, sealant, supplies, tools, scaffolding rental, and all materials needed to complete the mural, ensuring durability of materials for long-term vibrancy and maintenance.

  • Timeline/ anticipated work schedule

 

2)One page (8.5” x 11”) sketch, illustration or mock-up of proposed mural to scale

 

3)One page statement/bio which summarizes previous experience/public art/mural philosophy

 

4)3-5 jpgs of previous artwork, annotated with date, title, cost, location (if applicable)

 

Mural Project Timeline:

  • Submission deadline: July 20, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. (ET). Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

  • Review of applications: July 20– July 27

  • Notification of selected artists: July 28, 2020

  • Implementation: Tuesday, August 8 – September 4th, 2020

  • Completion of murals: No later than the second week of September 2020

Information sessions for potential applicants will be offered via ZOOM.

It is recommended that all potential applicants attend or view the recording of one of these sessions.
