All classes are FREE and open to K-12 youth and their parent/guardian or caregiver.

WEAVING WITH WORDS | 2PM SATURDAYS | MARCH 18-MAY 6 | AGES 8-12

Theresa Davis, a longtime educator and slam poet, and Marquetta B Quilting (Marquetta Johnson), will lead participants through an exploration of identity and place, writing in a variety of styles to create a chapbook, then applying art techniques to create a family story quilt.

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTISTS:

Marquetta Johnson is a Textile Artist and Quilter currently residing in Stone Mountain, Georgia. She is a creator and maker of Textiles, Wall Hangings, Quilts and Collectibles made from her own Hand Dyed, Tie Dyed, Printed and Stamped fabrics. She has over 30 years of teaching artist experience and professional development in the areas of Arts Integration, Arts Infusion, and inclusive classrooms for all ages and all abilities.

Marquetta has appeared on many radio and television shows discussing and demonstrating her art form, an example being HGTV’s “Crafters Coast to Coast.” Marquetta’s artwork has been featured in several magazines including “Quilt Magazine” and MARTA’s “Marta on the Go Magazine.” Her artwork is in many private and corporate collections such as the estate of the late B.B King, Faith Ringgold, the University of Maryland, Turner Broadcasting, and The Coca Cola Company. Marquetta is also a published author having written the book “Hand Dyed Quilts” now being sold

on Amazon.com. Marquetta has affiliations with VSA arts International/Kennedy Center, The Names Project-The AIDS Memorial Quilt Foundation, the Decatur Education Foundation, Utah State University’s Arts Access Program and the High Museum of Art, in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Marquetta has a textile studio practice and presently offers STEM/STEAM inspired art experiences virtually K-12. She also encourages “young artists” to embrace quilting by writing a blog for the Modern Quilt Guild’s Member’s Newsletter demonstrating and discussing how the Art of Quilting intersects with Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

Theresa Davis, a classroom teacher for thirty years, continues her love of teaching as an independent contractor and teaching artist. Theresa captivates and engages with young people from elementary to university. Some of her favorite and frequent schools are Brown Middle School (West End), Hollis Innovation Academy (Vine City), Mt. Vernon Presbeterian Middle School (Sandy Springs), Georgia Tech University (Midtown), Exeter Academy (New Hampshire), and University of Utah. She was the outreach coordinator for Positive Impact and serves on the board of Poetry Atlanta. Theresa has facilitated workshops and performed internationally in places such as, Aubu Dhabi and Hoofddorp in the Netherlands. 

Theresa is the Literary Director for the ArtsXchange in East Point, Georgia.
